Sleep apnea is characterized as a sleeping disorder in which a person ceases to breath at various intervals during the sleep. This dangerous sleeping disorder can remain undetected for quite some time. Usually, sleep apnea is recognized by others who witness the sleeping episodes. Fortunately for those with this problem, there are some solutions. A continuous positive airway pressure machine has been developed that presses air through the throat of the sleeping person. This machine has been found to be very effective and can help alleviate some of the adverse daytime side effects of sleep apnea.

Basically, a sleep apnea machine opens the sleeper’s airway with pressurized air through the throat. These masks and machines are not like ventilators. The machines are used only to aid sleepers and give slight pressure when the sleeper ceases to breathe. Unlike a ventilator, CPAP machines create positive pressure while opening the airways. The machine will push the air into the lungs during obstruction to prevent sleep apnea. The apparatus is mainly used at home, and is recommended every night.

As the muscles relax during sleep, the throat of a person with sleep apnea will narrow. When this happen, oxygen in the blood is significantly reduced causing the person to wake. This piece of equipment keeps this from happening by sending a pressurized stream of compressed air through the nose. This keeps the airway unobstructed and allows easier breathing. The machines have been amazingly successful in reducing or preventing sleep apnea, as well as the loud snoring that usually accompanies the sleep disorder.

Some sleep apnea sufferers will begin seeing immediate results after the first night’s use. However, it is not uncommon for users to take time to adjust to the new machine. The contraption looks uncomfortable and breathing on the machine can be difficult for some people. Different candidates differ on their difficulty adjusting to the machine; while some discontinue treatment entirely. There have been some studies that show that cognitive behavioral therapy can help with the adjustment period and keep sleepers at ease with the new equipment.

The custom masks are fitted to each individual face. Finding the correct size is imperative for the machine to fully function. It must create a tight seal around the nose and mouth, or the machine will not have the full effect. CPAP masks are available in many different shapes and comfort levels. They can be made with gel cushions, air cushions, and other comfortable yet fitting materials. They can also come in a smaller nasal mask form that just fits the nose.

There are three main components to CPAP machines: the flow generator, the hose, and the interface. The flow generator is the part of the machine that supplies the compressed air. The compressed air travels through the hose to the interface. The hose is sometimes rigged with a humidifier to help reduce some of the adverse effects of dry compressed air. The interface is the nasal or full face mask. This provides the connection to the sleeper’s airway. Some interfaces even include a lip-seal mouthpiece to prevent the sleeper from breathing through their mouth.

Sleep apnea machines also offer several optional pieces that can help make the process more comfortable for users. A humidifier moistens the air and can help alleviate the discomfort of dry compressed air. A ramp is another optional feature that temporarily lowers air pressure to help the sleeper fall asleep. Another option is the exhalation pressure relief, which adjusts the pressure during exhalation. Finally, flexible chin straps can be added to help keep the candidate from breathing through the mouth.

As with any medical equipment, proper maintenance is essential for proper functioning. Keeping the appliance clean and free from debris is also imperative for full utility. In most cases, this instrument is only available by prescription, and candidates will need to undergo a sleep lab before treatment can start. Nonetheless, the use of CPAP machines can significantly reduce or eliminate sleep apnea.

Are you in desperate search for an effective snoring solution? Well you are not alone in your quest for a peaceful night sleep. Snoring is caused by a blockage of your air passage while sleeping, and the noisy vibration that you hear is brought about by air.

When a person snores, there is an obstruction in the passage ways of air, thus causing the noise. These blockages are caused by a variety of factors such as obesity, alcohol consumption, sleeping positions, eating too much before sleeping and sometimes the intake of sleeping pills.

Snoring is definitely quite disturbing, especially to the family members of the person who snores. A loud snore can wake a person who is sound asleep. Individuals who suffer from this type of air obstruction often have a poor quality sleep and wake feeling not very refreshed. This also affects the family members of the person who snores as they will also suffer from sleep deprivation.

If you suffer from snoring, here are a number of snoring solutions that you can try that may help you to stop snoring:

• Since obesity predisposes a person to snoring, it would be best to lose weight by engaging in a healthy diet and having a regular exercise routine. Keep in mind that obesity also predisposes you to a lot of chronic diseases that are often permanent or irreversible. By losing weight and maintaining the normal weight range, you can avoid snoring and developing chronic diseases.

• Experts have found out that most people with this issue snore even louder when they drink alcohol prior to sleeping. Alcohol can cause various alternations in the body system, aside from its depressant effects. When a person drinks alcohol, the muscles tend to relax. Included in these relaxed muscles is the tongue, which tends to block the airways during sleeping.

• Aside from alcohol and obesity, a simple snoring solution is to alter your sleeping position. People who sleep flat on their back tend to snore because lung expansion is not promoted and gravity pulls the tongue back. The best recommended position for sleeping is to sleep on the side, or on a side-lying position. Sleeping on the side-lying position will also help in draining secretions that could possibly block the airways. It is also advisable for patients who snore to sleep with two to three pillows to elevate their head. This will promote better lung expansion and prevent snoring.

• People who are fond of having heavy meals at dinner are encouraged to stop this habit because it doesn’t bring anything beneficial. Aside from the fact that the body’s metabolism is slowed down during sleeping, it could also cause acid reflux. Acid reflux would then result in snoring, not to mention the damage that it can cause to the oesophagus of the person. The esophageal lining is incapable of protecting the oesophagus due to the acidity caused by acid reflux.

• Dairy products should also be avoided at night. Dairy products can actually increase mucus production that could block your nasal airways which often results in snoring. Mucus can also lodge in the throat which could increase the intensity of snoring.

• For people who are having difficulties in sleeping, they would often resort to taking sleeping pills. However, intake of sleeping pills can predispose a person to snore louder than usual. You can find other means to induce sleeping rather than resorting to sleeping pills.

I am pregnant 30 weeks and really need to sleep in my bed but my husband snores like a freight train. I ask him to sleep on the couch sometimes but he is a big guy and the couch is to small {It’s actually funny watching him trying to sleep there} and we really can’t afford to buy another couch right now. Well I want to sleep with him but he is loud I mean really loud. I saw a commerical for a pillow that helps snoring but it was expensive is it worth the money? I really need to sleep and the couch is not working for me either

For the person that suffers from snoring, going to bed often has nothing to do with going to sleep. It is important to recognize that an individual that snores is often as easily disturbed by the snoring as the partner that shares their bed. This important reality has resulted in the consumer market being flooded with stop snoring devices that promise to put an end to the snoring dilemma that so many people suffer with on a nightly basis.

In recent years, medical technology has worked very hard to determine solutions that might end the constant battle between snoring and sleep deprivation and bring a peaceful nights sleep to everyone involved. While there are many stop snoring devices available on the market today and each of them guarantees to provide the desired result it is important to review the promises, objectives and guidelines to establish which one is best for your personal needs.

The Pillow That Promises To Stop Snoring

The “Sandler” pillow is a popular device created to stop snoring. Named after its creator, the “Sandler” pillow promises to put an end to snoring. The design of the pillow forces the snoring individual to sleep on their side. It is widely upheld that those who sleep on their side do so with their mouth closed and therefore do not snore as readily as someone that is sleeping on their back.

While some mild snoring may occur while sleeping on the side as the vibration in the soft palate is still in existence, the loud disruptive snoring that takes place during back sleep does not occur.

A Stop Snoring Device That Provides An Audible Reminder To Roll Over

In recent years, there has been the creation of electronic stop snoring devices that provide behavior modification by use of an electric beeping sound. In a methodology similar to the concept of the famous Pavlov’s dog, the machine is attached to the snoring partner and begins to emit a beeping sound when the snorer rolls from side to back.

Since it is a common held belief that the snoring gets louder when the snorer is on their back, this machine prevents that position change by way of an electronic beeping sound. While it seems the beeping sound would be just as disruptive as the snoring, the basic idea is that the sleep position monitors are to be used for short-term behavior modification, not as a lifelong device to prevent nightly snoring.

With all the available medical treatments for sleep apnea, the vast majority of cases still remain undiagnosed and untreated due to a lack of awareness. To further increase the awareness concerning sleep apnea, the American Sleep Apnea Association is looking for sleep apnea patients and encouraging them to share their concerns. This may be the best medication yet! The ASAA believes that, by promoting awareness among the sufferers themselves, they will be able to prevent more cases from going undiagnosed. This method was established to promote information effectively just like a homepage on the internet which provides “pop-up” boxes for inquiries, testimonials, and related stories. In the case of the ASAA plan, formerly treated patients will hopefully create “pop-up” diagnoses amongst their friends, family members or acquaintances who were previously undiagnosed. The diabetes society and cancer society, for example, use this same technique to promote awareness through their previously diagnosed patients.

Of course, like any other disease or health condition, medical research has come up with many forms of medication for sleep apnea. These medications are usually oral and they prevent and control muscle collapse in the throat which occurs during sleep. This is what causes airway blockage and then results in sleep apnea. It won’t be you who will determine the suitable treatment however! It is only your doctor who can determine which treatment will be best.

There are many medicated treatment plans for sleep apnea and one of the more famous and intriguing approaches that has shown great results is the “Pilar Procedure”. This procedure is carried out by placing three small woven inserts into the soft palate of the mouth. This reduces the vibrations that cause the snoring noise in sleep apnea patients. According to the FDA, this treatment is approved and is virtually pain free. About eighty percent of all patients suffering from sleep apnea and snoring have been satisfied with the comfortable effect of this approach. This is even true considering that it can be done in one simple office visit!

Treatment of the more mild cases of sleep apnea is often done through changes in lifestyle. These changes in lifestyle include avoiding medication that causes relaxation of the central nervous system such as sedatives and muscle relaxants. Instead, they incorporate the losing of weight, the quitting of smoking and the avoidance of alcohol. They also involve sleeping in a different position with the help of a special pillow. This pillow is a device that keeps you from sleeping on your back to keep the airway open during sleep. This tells us that good posture while sleeping contributes to the quality of sleep. The likes of a water bed or a good quality bed mattress, for instance, may also provide a comfortable and relaxing position that result in a deeper sleep.

Less fortunate individuals who suffer from a more severe case of sleep apnea are typically treated using air blowing machines called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (C-PAP) machines. This instrument blows air into the nose of the patient via a tube and a mask. For a more severe situation, another type of machine called a Bi-Level Machine (Bi-PAP) works by blowing two different pressures of air to help the lungs breathe in and out properly.

In cases where the modification of either the uvula or the dangling tissue at the rear of the throat is needed, uvulopalatopharygoplasty or UPPP is a form of surgery that can be carried out. In children, Adenotonsillectomy along with weight normalization is considered to be the first line of treatment. This procedure is characterized by the removal of tonsils and adenoids to increase the cross-sectional airway of the patient. Occasionally, medical procedures such as these only help the problem but do not totally eliminate it. Therefore, they must still be accompanied by a device like a C-PAP, nasal mask, face mask, gel mask or nasal pillow.

Keeping your healthy lifestyle and regaining your happy family life are the most significant reasons for seeking medical treatment for sleep apnea. Bear in mind that only a doctor can determine the causes and the type of the treatment which suits you best. It is up to you to seek out the proper diagnosis from a doctor and attend to this very serious problem of sleep apnea

Over 70 Million people in the USA suffer from some kind of Sleep Disorder! There are actually hundreds of ways to improve your sleep but the first thing that is needed is to raise more awareness!
